Although entitled to march on ANZAC Day, Paul Jacks and I had never marched for several years until we decided that, if we youngsters did not begin to march, soon there would be a smaller percentage of genuine returned servicemen in the march than those who, commendably, make up the numbers.

Paul, who was my best friend in the navy, died recently on September 26, 2025. Because I am still hale and hearty, I will continue to march whenever I am able to do so.

Whenever I hear the Last Post (played below), I cry, as I did at Paul's funeral and because I always remember the 82 who drowned when HMAS Voyager was cut in half by the Melboune, having attended their memorial service shortly afterwards.

Place the pointer over the navy band to see John's last ship, HMAS Vampire. Then place the pointer over John and Paul marching to hear the band.
